Answer to J Collins about what to do on a weekend in Rye. The quayside. Walking in and out of town, mooching around the town, bookshops, afternoon tea in any number of cafes in Rye or the Tea Tree at Winchelsea, Winchelsea and Rye both have interesting parish churches. If you read Monica Edwards Romney Marsh novels as a child don't miss the village of Rye Harbour about a mile out of the town of Rye - it's the real life location of her fictional village of Westling. If you don't mind heights go climb to the top of Rye church for wonderful views.
From The Punchbowl

Johnny Doughty is mentioned in "From The Punchbowl", the magazine of the Monica Edwards Society, as the possible model for Jim Decks, the fictional ferryman in the Westling of M.E.'s Romney Marsh Stories, set around Rye Harbour. M.E. was the daughter of one of the vicars of Rye Harbour.
The Old Vicarage

Does anyone know the status of The Old Vicarage at Rye Harbour? It used to do B&B but the last I heard (2005) it was not doing so. Information would be gratefully received.
