The Mermaid Inn
In November 2016, the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC published documents concerning the 1597 visit of Shakespeare’s troupe to Rye for the mayor-making of Mermaid owner, John Fowtrell with an article written by local independent scholars Paul & Rosie Franczak, placing Rye on the world map of Shakespearean scholarship. This inaugural lecture marks the event.
Professor of English at the University of Sussex, Andrew Hadfield is the author of Edmund Spenser, a life and Shakespeare and Republicanism. He is editing the works of Thomas Nashe for Oxford University Press with Jennifer Richards, Joseph Black and Cathy Shrank.
