Hi Diane.

I have just seen your messages re Harndens. John Harnden was my 5th Gt Grandfather on my mothers side. The seafaring and associated trades runs quite strong throughout the family, i have discovered branches in Salcombe,Devon (3rd Gt Uncles) that were ship owners and Master Mariners. My details are on Ancestry.com and are on public view I believe though that you can only access them if you're a member, if you're not then I would be more than happy to send you details via email. My email is stewart.pratt3@gmail.com
Regards

Hi Ian.
I have just registered my details having seen your messages after googling John Harnden. He was my 5th Gt Grandfather on my mothers side of the family. The seafaring link is as you say quite strong in the family i have discovered two of his grandsons Edwin (1813-1896)and John (1806-1880) were both Master Mariners living in the Salcombe, Devon area. The latter died at sea in 1880 on board his own ship. Their descendants were also involved with sailing or associated trades. My Gt Grandfather Alfred Edwin (1870-1925) was a ships joiner and lived in Rye and Portsmouth before finally settling in Sheerness. All of my family details are on Ancestry.com and are on public view, although I believe you have to be a member to view. I would be more than happy to supply you details if you cant view them there. My email is stewart.pratt3@gmail.com
Regards
Stewart Pratt.

Thanks Diane,
Looks like the cyber censor decided my message needed shortening. [Ed. sorry about that, content must have been longer than the system allowed, will look into fixing this.]
Basically what I had written refered to my embarrasment about claiming to be able to trace back to John and Jane Harnden in Ticehurst.
Compared with what you probably know about them, I can only use the Will of John Harnden of 1836.
Even then I needed to link the fact that the Will said that he was a Mariner.
The Mariner thread seems to be strong in the Harnden family, best smmed up for me in the inlaid slipware spirit flask inscribed Henry Harnden, 1844.

Amazingly the surviving Harndens in Australia are keen spend a large part of their time on the water also.

If you would like a copy of the 1836 Will please contact me at iandmurphy@optusnet.com.au

I would really appreciate any other information or stories that you may have regards the Maritime link.

Cheers

Thanks John

Sorry for the delay we have been away. Looks like they are the same family.

I can trace Henry Colin Harnden back 4 generations to John Harnden, born 1755 Ticehurst Kent. He married Jane Fry.

Living descendants are in Melbourne Australia.

Cheers

Hi Ian

Henry Colin HARNDEN baptised 13 Feb 1857 Rye, son of Philadelphia SAUNDERS and Henry Spencer HARNDEN. Philadelphia died in 1858, so the couple had just the one child.

Leonie Forrest: Hello Leonie - We have a Henry Colin Harnden born in 1855 and married to Mary Jane Thornnton who started a fairly substantial clan here - not sur if it is your Henry Colin as we have no birth or wedding details.

I f you have any other info I may be able to check.

Cheers
